What is Desmodium? Desmodium adscendens is a wild, biennial herbaceous plant, creeping in damp places, that belongs to the Fabaceae family. It is mainly found in the equatorial regions of Africa, but also in Latin America. In Africa, it is used to combat liver conditions such as viral hepatitis. However, literature research highlights the medicinal use of desmodium stems and leaves against asthma and even epilepsy. Desmodium adscendens shows a high content of polyphenols, including flavonoids and anthocyanosides (vitexin, isovitexin) with antioxidant properties. And, to a lesser extent, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins and tannins. This composition justifies the interest in desmodium for liver protection, for combating asthma, allergic symptoms and bronchitis, but also cramps and muscle pain and certain disorders of the central nervous system. Moreover, it is also a very powerful natural antispasmodic.
