A low maternal folate level is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the foetus. The consumer must be informed that the target population is women of childbearing age and that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily supplementary intake of 400 μg of folic acid for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
