Panax Ginseng is available in two forms: white ginseng and red ginseng. It is the same plant root, obtained through two different preparation methods. The white form is simply dried and then ground, while the red form is gently steamed, before drying in the traditional way, in kilns. Gentle steam cooking mimics part of colonic metabolism, allowing part of the molecules to be metabolised into their active form. It has been shown that, on the same root, producing red ginseng favourably changes the profile of the active compounds, without degrading them, resulting in improved efficacy compared to the white form.
