About N-AcetylCysteine 600 N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) is an acetylated form of cysteine, an amino acid. Cysteine is part of the biochemical pathway for glutathione synthesis, an important antioxidant. New Roots Herbal's N-AcetylCysteine provides 600 mg of NAC per capsule. N-AcetylCysteine has properties similar to L-cysteine (NAC is simply an acetylated form of L-cysteine), and optimises the benefits of glutathione, being its direct precursor. Supplementation with L-cysteine and glutathione has been studied, and it appears that glutathione has limited therapeutic use as it is rapidly hydrolysed in the intestine. Indeed, the increase in systemic glutathione observed with oral glutathione supplementation is too small to be clinically relevant. NAC is a powerful antioxidant.
