PEA synthesis occurs when our cells are under stress, for example during trauma, infection or an inflammatory reaction. Cells use PEA to rebalance disrupted biological processes. PEA optimises the effect of endocannabinoids naturally produced by the body (molecules produced by our cells to reduce the perception of pain). This is referred to as an "endocannabinoid-like" effect. Unlike THC from cannabis, which is responsible for the plant’s psychotropic effects, PEA is an endogenous molecule and therefore has no side effects and no psychotropic properties. Under normal circumstances, the body produces adequate amounts of PEA. In some cases, when inflammatory phenomena become chronic, PEA levels are not sufficient to suppress the body's pro-inflammatory responses; PEA supplementation may then be considered.
