Today in Europe, from autumn through to spring inclusive, north of latitude 42°N, i.e. above a line running through Barcelona, Bastia and Rome, around 70% of the adult population is deficient in vitamin D, particularly menopausal women, seniors, overweight people, people with dark skin, people wearing very covering clothing that limits vitamin D production from UV rays, people who get little sun exposure or live in regions with little sunshine, breastfeeding women, vegetarians and people receiving certain treatments. Vitamin D is nonetheless essential for normal bone, muscle and dental health, as well as for maintaining an optimal immune system. Naturally sourced components VITAMIN D Vitamin D can come from two sources: either produced naturally in the skin through the action of ultraviolet rays, or provided through diet. Vitamin D3 is most often provided by large fish (salmon, cod, halibut, tuna…), which unfortunately concentrate pollutants, and by other sources such as the fat contained in treated sheep's wool, from which the lanolin used for certain vitamin D3 supplements is extracted, or, more rarely, from a plant-based or organic source, notably derived from lichen (Ultra Végan D3). Vitamin D2 of plant-based or organic origin, which has its own specific value, can be provided by yeast and mushrooms grown on a plant-based substrate, which are naturally rich in ergosterol, a precursor of vitamin D. In mushrooms, another form of vitamin D, different from vitamin D2 and D3, has also recently been identified and is thought to be vitamin D4 (Ref: Phillips KM & coll (2012) Vitamin D4 in Mushrooms. PLoS ONE) In order to offer a vitamin D free from any animal-derived or synthetic ingredient, and easily accepted by everyone, including vegetarians, Holistica® research selected a brewer's yeast which, simply dried under UV light, naturally develops its vitamin D content, somewhat like our skin does in the sun. Vitamin D plays an essential role in the maintenance of normal bone structure, teeth and muscle function. It is involved in the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus, as well as in the balance of cell division. Vitamin D also contributes to normal function of the immune system. Recent studies have shown that there is no significant difference between vitamins D2 and D3 in their effects on bone density, and that yeasts and mushrooms exposed to UV mainly contain vitamin D2, but also a little Vit. D3 and traces of this newly identified form of Vit. D4. It is also possible to alternate this form of Vitamin D, Ultra D Sium, with vitamin D3 derived from lichen, as offered in the liquid form Ultra Vegan D3. It may indeed be advisable to alternate between these two products from autumn-winter through to spring to provide the body with varied sources MARINE MAGNESIUM Magnesium is considered a significant cofactor nutrient for vitamin D. Both indeed have very similar and complementary physiological activity, both for bone and muscle health and for cell balance. The marine magnesium provided in ULTRA D SIUM capsules, together with vitamin D of neither animal nor synthetic origin, acts in synergy with it. It contributes to the normal metabolism of energy and the normal production of proteins by the body.
