AN ACTIVE, BIOAVAILABLE FORM Structurally, vitamin K molecules have a side chain whose length can vary, which matters for their efficacy. Unlike phylloquinones (vitamin k1), which have a fixed side chain, menaquinones (vitamin k2) have isoprenoid side chains whose length and degree of saturation vary. The longer the side chain, the more effective the biological action. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the superior activity of menaquinone-7 compared with other forms. Vitamin K1, used mainly by the liver, is not readily available to the body's other tissues . As for menaquinone-4, it has a shorter side chain and therefore lower efficacy than menaquinone-7. Pharmacokinetically, vitamin K2 MK7 has a high half-life (the time it takes for a substance to lose half of its physiological activity). This allows it to remain available for longer in the bloodstream to be used by the various organs. It is absorbed by the body for up to 72h after ingestion, compared with only 24h for vitamin K1, giving it a bioavailability three times higher .
